Fall is in the air! This is by FAR my favorite time of the year- the colors are changing, football is back (GO PACK GO!) and it is finally sweatshirt weather! I also love the energy that is so strong in the fall. There is something about the start of a new school year that brings out that productive energy, similar to the start of a new calendar year.
I am not a New Year’s Resolution girl. I love the idea of them, but they never seem to stick. I get so excited about the new year to come and the fresh start that is before me. I make the typical New Year’s resolutions: lose weight, exercise, eat better, save more money and be a better wife/mother/daughter/friend. I have high hopes that this will be the year for change! After a few weeks (more likely, after a few days) I have done something that “breaks” my resolution and I go back to my old habits.
A few years ago, I heard about the idea of having a “word of the year.” Sort of a theme for your year. Maybe your word is imagine, explore, challenge or balance- the possibilities are endless. This worked for me because I could apply this one word to many areas of my life. With two little girls, a growing business and just life in general- it can be difficult to plan an entire year of goals in advance. However, I do know the basic outline of the next four months and I can set an intention for that time. Let’s take simplify. I can simplify my home, my schedule or my wardrobe. It makes me act and action produces results.
Spend some time this week thinking about the next four months. How do you want it to look and feel? What big events are coming up for you and your family? With the holidays right around the corner, what traditions do you want to start or continue?
Take a piece of paper and fold it in half. On one side write ‘MORE’ and the opposite side write ‘LESS.’ Fill this sheet in with things or feelings that you want more or less of from now until New Years. This is where you can dream BIG! For example- I want MORE time with family/friends, freedom and peace. And I want LESS stress, busy and debt. Is there a theme? That’s your word for the Fall of 2018. Easy, right?!
Have you ever made a VISION BOARD?! It’s an easy, creative way to set positive intentions for the coming year or season. They are beautiful visual collections that allow you to refocus on your GOALS, your DREAMS and all the things that INSPIRE you!! This is the next action step in realizing your goals. Take a poster or bulletin board, some magazines, scissors & glue and start crafting! Clip out words, pictures or images that speak to you and your intention for the year. Look at it often to remind yourself of where you want to be and how far you’ve come. It can be pretty powerful.
